Verizon Family
Consolidating five legacy family products into one app, and turning NPS around by nearly 20 points in a year.
Principal / Staff Product Designer · 15+ years
I design high-stakes products for the people who depend on them: FX trading screens at EBS BrokerTec, including EBS Direct FX Forwards at $41B a day, and Verizon's connected-family apps and wearables, where every product serves two people at once. Most recently I led a 30-person design organization across Verizon's consumer portfolio.

A smartwatch worn by a six-year-old and bought, set up and trusted by a parent.
Independence for an older adult and reassurance for their family, without making either feel monitored.

One designer, five financial verticals, 75 components, and no room for drift between the docs and the product. Built Claude-first.

I'm a hands-on Principal Product Designer with more than 15 years in telecom and financial services, and I've led teams when the work called for it. My work sits where mistakes are expensive: a trader acting on a price, or a parent trusting a watch on their child's wrist.
At Verizon I managed a 30-person cross-functional design organization across five product squads to consolidate and launch the unified Verizon Family app. After launch, as a new Director took over the team, I moved back into a hands-on Principal role. My work spanned a consumer portfolio that reached more than 20 million subscribers, including 5G Home Internet, Verizon Cloud, Verizon Family, Verizon Protect and the Gizmo and Care Smart wearables. Before that I spent five years at EBS BrokerTec designing FX trading interfaces, and earlier designed for JPMorgan Chase Private Bank, Citigroup, KPMG and BNY Mellon.
I lead by giving designers ownership of hard problems, pushing for testing with real users, and getting design into the room before requirements are set. Today I use AI tools (Claude, Gemini, NotebookLM, Figma Make) for research synthesis and fast interactive prototyping.

"Rick Hollandsworth is a valuable leader on the Family Design team, demonstrating commitment and strong engagement with the unified Verizon Family app throughout its development. He champions the customer's needs and upholds solution quality, ensuring that quality benchmarks are consistently met and aligned with design standards. Throughout the year, Rick has strengthened relationships with Product and Technology partners, fostering greater collaboration and better processes. He's adapted to evolve our sprint design process with earlier design involvement to help establish requirements and set up more frequent touchpoints to better support our designers. He effectively manages the often dynamic and at times high-pressure situations with tight deadlines, and shifting priorities, driving impactful solutions while effectively negotiating project constraints and stakeholder expectations. He's supported the overall success of the broader Product Design team, as he has played a key role in recruiting, hiring, and onboarding new members, and helping establishing a strong and cohesive team."
"Rick excels at providing guidance while fostering independence. During a recent challenging project involving feature accuracy due to shifts in user technology, Rick supported me as I proposed solutions, identified touchpoints, and worked through dependencies. Rather than being prescriptive, he encouraged me to take ownership of the problem while offering thoughtful support. This approach enabled explorations that framed the problem and offered solutions holistically."
"Rick's support for exploration and iteration, especially with complex projects, is one of his greatest strengths. He creates space for designers to take ownership of problems and develop diverse, innovative solutions, empowering the team with motivation and confidence in their work."
"Rick continues to be an important leader for the +Protect portfolio. He has taken ownership and accountability to ensure business expectations are met from a delivery standpoint, while also ensuring that his team gets support in form of guidance, feedback and mentorship."
"This past year, Rick has made great progress in building trust and deepening the relationships with key stakeholders and partners. He helped establish better ways of collaborating across multiple groups and opening up communications. Rick and his team have made a crucial contribution around Individual Profiles, Brand 3.0 expansion, and work around the Security Dashboard as a foundation for a future +Protect Dashboard."
"In 2022 Rick took on the mentorship of a designer outside of his team and he has helped them to grow and progress in their career. Rick continues to be a key partner in hiring new talent as well as getting them up-to-speed on product as well as organizational intricacies."
"Rick was an awesome teammate to work with on the 5G Home project, one of Verizon's top initiatives in 2018 to being the first to launch 5G. He brought his A game to every meeting and went above and beyond his role to ensure the success of the project. As a colleague who was senior to me, Rick always made me feel like an equal when we collaborated and gave me meaningful career advice. Rick is truly a defender of users. He has a deep understanding of the business and pushes for solutions that puts users first."
